En 2000, alors qu\u2019il pr\u00e9parait les programmes de la maison qui porta son nom, Louis Audibert (1946-2004) obtint l\u2019accord de Jacques Le Goff pour un livre-entretien, o\u00f9 le grand historien reviendrait sur sa carri\u00e8re et ses travaux. Il m\u2019en confia le soin sachant mon int\u00e9r\u00eat pour la culture m\u00e9di\u00e9vale et les travaux de celui qui en a profond\u00e9ment renouvel\u00e9 l\u2019approche. Ainsi naquit A la recherche du Moyen Age<\/em>, paru en 2003.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

C\u2019est en lisant Ivanho\u00e9<\/em> de Walter Scott, un jour de 1936, que le jeune toulonnais, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 12 ans, fut confirm\u00e9 dans son go\u00fbt de l\u2019histoire et de l\u2019\u00e9criture. Il partit \u00e0 la recherche du Moyen Age tout comme le narrateur, dans l\u2019\u0153uvre de Marcel Proust, enqu\u00eate sur le Temps perdu. Le Moyen Age est ainsi pour Jacques Le Goff une aventure humaine \u00e0 la fois spirituelle et bien incarn\u00e9e – aventure gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 laquelle il interrogea constamment le XXe si\u00e8cle dont il v\u00e9cut les combats avec autant de g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 que d\u2019ouverture d\u2019esprit.
A la fois autobiographie intellectuelle et vaste synth\u00e8se d\u2019un mill\u00e9naire capital, la Recherche du Moyen Age<\/em> donne les cl\u00e9s d\u2019une civilisation qui nous a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9s, \u00e0 la fois tr\u00e8s proche et presque \u00e9trange. Refusant la l\u00e9gende \u00ab noire \u00bb d\u2019un Moyen Age obscur, tout comme les r\u00eaveries trop id\u00e9alis\u00e9es d\u2019un temps chevaleresque, il fait revivre l’intense richesse d\u2019une refondation occidentale. L’Eglise chr\u00e9tienne y est omnipr\u00e9sente, prolongeant \u00e0 sa fa\u00e7on la \u00ab romanit\u00e9 \u00bb tout en assimilant la culture \u00ab barbare \u00bb. Ainsi se fa\u00e7onne, au fil des si\u00e8cles, un nouvel espace-temps.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Au Moyen Age, selon Le Goff, la Vierge devient la Quatri\u00e8me Personne de la Trinit\u00e9. Ici la Vierge et l’Enfant en majest\u00e9, de Cimabue (vers 1280)<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

L\u2019historien montre la capacit\u00e9 d’innovation d’un monde qui se disait pourtant hostile \u00e0 toute nouveaut\u00e9. Il s\u2019attache au concept de \u00ab renaissance \u00bb, pour lui profond\u00e9ment m\u00e9di\u00e9val, tout comme le souci de \u00ab r\u00e9forme \u00bb. La renaissance du XVe si\u00e8cle, loin d\u2019\u00eatre une rupture n\u2019est, dit-il, que la cinqui\u00e8me depuis le temps de Charlemagne. Il pr\u00e9f\u00e8re parler de sorties progressives du Moyen Age au fur et \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019Europe s\u2019\u00e9loigne des rythmes et sociabilit\u00e9s du monde agricole.
Anxieux de la fin des temps, le Moyen Age se voit pourtant port\u00e9 par un formidable espoir. Il est pour l\u2019historien la source de l\u2019humanisme qui lui parait, au seuil du XXIe si\u00e8cle, la valeur fondamentale d\u2019une Europe encore \u00e0 venir. Ce grand dessein europ\u00e9en \u2013 confirm\u00e9 par son engagement aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019aventure polonaise de Solidarnosc – resta celui de Jacques Le Goff jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort en 2014 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 90 ans.<\/span><\/p>
