Je l\u2019ai retrouv\u00e9 lors de mes \u00e9tudes universitaires avant de lui consacrer, en 1974, mon m\u00e9moire de ma\u00eetrise. Depuis, je suis souvent revenu sur <em>Dominique<\/em> et l\u2019ensemble des \u0153uvres de Fromentin, y compris sa peinture. Plus encore apr\u00e8s m\u2019\u00eatre familiaris\u00e9 avec <em>La recherche du temps perdu<\/em>. L\u2019emploi du temps selon Proust entretient, en effet, un rapport complexe avec celui de Fromentin.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dcba66e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"dcba66e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6455651 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6455651\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Aussi ai-je \u00e9t\u00e9 surpris, au hasard d\u2019une recherche sur le grand journaliste Anatole Pr\u00e9vost-Paradol (1829-1870), par un court roman de celui-ci, <em>Mme de Mar\u00e7ay<\/em> (1860). Ce texte semble avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 le prototype de celui de Fromentin, paru trois ans plus tard, notamment la perp\u00e9tuelle s\u00e9paration inflig\u00e9e aux impossibles amants : le comte de Ferni et Mme de Mar\u00e7ay chez Pr\u00e9vost-Paradol, Dominique de Bray et Madeleine de Ni\u00e8vres chez Fromentin. Fait d\u2019autant plus curieux que l\u2019on s\u2019accorde \u00e0 voir dans l\u2019intrigue amoureuse de <em>Dominique<\/em> la transposition de la passion contrari\u00e9e, puis tragique, du jeune Fromentin avec sa voisine L\u00e9ocadie B\u00e9raud, vingt-cinq ans plus t\u00f4t. La cavali\u00e8re, h\u00e9sitant entre deux hommes, et la mer se trouvent au c\u0153ur des deux romans. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f00c2e9 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"f00c2e9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-614695d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"614695d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Le parall\u00e9lisme s\u2019explique d\u2019abord par la passion platonique, grand th\u00e8me du romantisme \u2013 et pas seulement litt\u00e9raire. Dans la \u00ab\u00a0vraie vie\u00a0\u00bb, Pr\u00e9vost-Paradol aime d&rsquo;une passion impossible Hortense Howland, jeune femme mari\u00e9e. Fromentin s\u2019enflamme bient\u00f4t, \u00e0 son tour, de cette m\u00eame Mme Howland, et de mani\u00e8re non moins platonique. Le journaliste et le peintre se connaissaient. Ils fr\u00e9quentaient le m\u00eame milieu.<br>Tout en s\u2019\u00e9garant dans le m\u00eame labyrinthe que son ami Pr\u00e9vost-Paradol, Fromentin&nbsp; reproduit avec Hortense Howland l\u2019\u00e9pisode malheureux de son amour de jeunesse pour L\u00e9ocadie B\u00e9raud, jeune femme mari\u00e9e, elle aussi. Fromentin projette sur Hortense les souvenirs qu\u2019il avait de L\u00e9ocadie. R\u00e9ciproquement, la personnalit\u00e9 d&rsquo; Hortense \u00ab\u00a0reconstruit\u00a0\u00bb la L\u00e9ocadie d&rsquo;autrefois. Les quelque cent soixante-quinze lettres d\u2019Eug\u00e8ne \u00e0 sa belle Hortense en t\u00e9moignent.<br>Cette infernale r\u00e9p\u00e9tition de l\u2019impossible &#8211; femme pr\u00e9sente \u00ab\u00a0parasit\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb par une femme fant\u00f4me &#8211; avait servi d\u2019arri\u00e8re-plan \u00e0 mon roman <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanmaurice-demontremy.com\/index.php\/bilkis\/\"><em><strong>Bilkis<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (2005). Lorsque l\u2019\u00e9ditrice Lidia Breda me demanda en 2009 de pr\u00e9senter une \u00e9dition du roman <em>Mme de Mar\u00e7ay<\/em> dans la collection Rivages-poche, j\u2019ai donc orient\u00e9 ma recherche sur Hortense Howland. C\u2019est elle, la myst\u00e9rieuse \u00ab femme en blanc \u00bb dont la silhouette hantait Pr\u00e9vost-Paradol et dont Fromentin peignit le portrait une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s la publication de <em>Dominique <\/em>(portrait reproduit en couverture du livre, ci-dessus). Le texte de Pr\u00e9vost-Paradol se pr\u00e9sente donc ici comme un pr\u00e9lude \u00e0 l&rsquo;enqu\u00eate sur la Femme en blanc.<br>Hortense Howland comptait aussi Edgar Degas parmi ses proches. Elle tenait avec son amie Genevi\u00e8ve Straus, veuve de Georges Bizet, un salon qui passe pour avoir inspir\u00e9 \u00e0 Proust celui des Guermantes.
